What is YAG Laser Capsulotomy?

YAG laser capsulotomy is a procedure designed to restore clear vision following cataract surgery. Sometimes, months or even years after cataract surgery, vision can become hazy again due to clouding of the membrane at the back of the eye, known as the posterior capsule. This condition is often referred to as a “secondary cataract,” although this is not truly a recurrence of a cataract.

How is YAG Laser Capsulotomy Performed?

Before the procedure, eye drops are instilled to help numb the surface of the eye and prevent eye pressure elevation immediately following the laser. The procedure itself is painless.

The doctor typically places a contact lens with some gel on the surface of the eye to help focus the laser and prevent the lids from blinking. The YAG laser is used to create an opening in the cloudy posterior capsule. This opening allows light to pass through the capsule and reach the retina at the back of the eye, which is essential for clear vision. The procedure usually takes just a few minutes.

What to Expect After YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Your doctor will check your eye pressure about 30 minutes to 1 hour after the procedure to ensure that it is in the normal range. It is normal for your vision to be blurry immediately following the procedure, but this typically improves significantly within minutes. It may take a few days for your vision to fully clear up, but you should not experience pain. Spots of floaters after the laser are common and normally resolve within a few days to weeks. Most people can resume their normal activities or return to work the day after the procedure.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up appointments are crucial for ensuring your treatment is effective and to monitor your recovery. Make sure to attend all scheduled appointments and contact your doctor if you experience any issues.
